exciting news: etsy shop is open!

I know I’ve been away from the blog for a couple months, but that’s only because I have been working hard designing stationery and a few fun (and meaningful) prints for my new Etsy shop {Liz & Louise // prints + paper}. It’s now open for business and I would love it if you’d check it out. Scroll down for a sneak peek!

before & after: living room fireplace

We recently decided to paint our living room fireplace white after I came across this pretty image on Pinterest. I wanted this same look in my living room. Painting is the easy part. Choosing which shade of white was the hard part. They all look so similar on the color swatches. We decided on Sherwin-Williams Snowbound. It seemed to match up with our trim the best. It has really brightened up our living room and only took a few hours for each coat of paint. Such an easy weekend project!

Here’s our inspiration:

And the after:

We also had the fireplace converted to a wood-burning fireplace, which we have absolutely loved this winter. It’s so cozy to have a real fire burning. The slats in the brick are there for a reason. It’s called a heatilator and actually works. Once a fire gets going, cold air is pulled into the bottom sections and is warmed up. Heat rises, so naturally the hot air comes out of the top slats and helps heat the room…it’s very cool.

So, what do you think? Mantle or no mantle? Maybe a simple wooden shelf, so I can layer framed pictures and art (like our inspiration photo). Or maybe a cool gold mirror instead. Stay tuned to see how it turns out.

Happy Friday!

guest post: a little color infusion

Hello, everyone! It’s Mari here, with a guest post from Arcadian Home blog, a great place to find interior design inspiration for everything from beautiful foyer lighting to warm and cozy rugs for the floor.

Today’s topic is all about ways to give rooms a little color infusion. I’ve pulled together eight images that illustrate ideas for adding color to interior spaces. From just a hint of pale color to a room infused with vibrant hues, we hope there’s inspiration here for everyone. Please enjoy! Thanks for letting me stop by to share. ~ Mari

Colorful Spaces

This little vignette shows how beautifully the colors of nature can fit into a slightly glam space. A tone on tone painting of birds on branches in pale blues merges seamlessly with a driftwood cabinet glammed up by mirrored doors.

Colorful Spaces

We’re seeing this lovely color palette of purple, turquoise and lime green used a lot lately. Here it works very successfully with a big pop of purple on the painted desk.

Colorful Spaces

A wonderful way to add color, pale or vibrant, is by painting the inside back of bookcases. That color will make objects on the shelves pop, especially when they are down-lit with picture lights like these brass beauties.

Colorful Spaces

It goes without saying that one of the easiest ways to infuse color into interior spaces is with decorative objects. But, their impact can be magnified by displaying them en masse as these stunning blue pitchers are.

Colorful Spaces

What a great way to add color to an all-white kitchen with a vivid work island counter top. Here, the designer has used a deep red, but the color chosen should be one you love and want to live with day after day. What color would you choose?

Colorful Spaces

Want easy color that can be changed out often? Colorful contemporary lamps are a great way to give rooms pops of color. Isn’t this little brass lamp with a red metal shade just the perfect accent in a black and white room?

Colorful Spaces

Such a simple idea and yet one we often overlook, a single colorful chair can add a little drama to just about any neutral space. Here a transparent purple chair brings this teen bathroom to life. By the way, this has become one of our most repinned images on Pinterest.

Colorful Spaces

If you love more than a pop of color, consider using several hues in a single color family to infuse a neutral or black and white room with color. Here, shades of Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 are used very successfully in neutral surroundings. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Here’s a fun roundup of what’s inspiring me on Pinterest. That chicken, bacon and wild rice soup was delish (top left)! A little thicker than your average soup, but we loved it. We painted our fireplace white after I saw this cozy kitchen photo…more on that project later. A beautiful navy upholstered headboard and pretty glass tiles are on my wish list. For a tasty Saturday morning breakfast, I’m making these buttermilk waffles this weekend. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of spring and this lovely striped (sleeveless!) top.

fire pit project: complete

We completed the fire pit a couple months ago and absolutely love it. Old man winter has been a little crazy, so I haven’t been able to get a good finished photo until now. So, as a reminder, I last left you with this image…

Well, here’s an idea of what we did next. Jason built up the back wall with concrete blocks. Then, we laid down landscaping material that lets water drain thru, but keeps the weeds out. We had a trailer of river rock delivered and we began adding that until we had covered the area evenly. We gathered all the larger rocks that you see by our flagstone paths from around the yard. And, I got some cute new work gloves to boot.

We chose light gray pavers for the fire pit and Jason made the pit by stacking three layers of pavers in a circle. However, you can only see two of the layers. So, the pit is deeper than it looks, which we think was a great idea. We added our adirondack chairs for now. And, that’s it. Take a look at the finished project.

Cheers to many more nights enjoying the great outdoors, right in our own backyard.

what’s cooking?

Creamy orzo with asparagus & parmesanSpicy sausage pasta

Y’all, I’ve been cooking up some yummy dishes lately. Both of these recipes will definitely be made again…and again. They are delicious. We went back for seconds, and that’s the ultimate test, right? When someone goes back for more? My grandmother, Louise, used to always tell my mother, “If you can read, you can cook.” I’m always reading and pinning recipes, but it’s a goal to actually put new dishes on the weekly menu. Follow my Pinterest board for more. Now, I can mark these two off the list.

a little cottage charm

Our house has lots of cottage charm. Nestled up on a big hill, the exterior is covered in shaker shingles. One thing about this house that had me at hello. I want to bring more cottage elements into the interior style of our house. I have always loved the look of planked walls. They really seem to cozy up a space and add some character. What do you think?
